Why Kashmir, and who it suits
Kashmir is the easiest sell and the hardest logistics job in North India. Easy, because the valley genuinely delivers on the postcard. Hard, because almost every headline attraction now runs on a booking system, a time slot or a seasonal window — and the difference between a good Kashmir trip and a frustrating one is entirely in the pre-booking.
It suits honeymooners, multi-generational families, and first-time Himalaya travellers who want beauty without altitude risk. Srinagar sits low enough that acclimatisation is a non-issue; the only altitude conversation is the Gulmarg Gondola's upper stage.

The operator consensus is that March–October suits sightseeing and December–February suits snow activities (travelmykashmir.com). Srinagar summer temperatures sit around 15–25 °C (flightconnections.com).
There is genuinely no bad month in Kashmir. There are only mismatched expectations — people who booked in June expecting snow, and people who booked in January expecting meadows.
The Gulmarg Gondola — the detail that makes or breaks the trip
More Kashmir itineraries fail on the Gondola than on anything else, so here is the operational truth, verified on 13 August 2026.
The Gondola is run by the Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation, established 1988. Official booking runs through etickets.jammukashmircablecar.com, and the corporation's own site warns travellers not to fall prey to touts (jammukashmircablecar.com).

The rules that actually catch people:
- Booking is online only. Physical counters have been discontinued. A limited number of same-day walk-up tickets are released at the waiting hall between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm, but they are not guaranteed.
- The Gondola is closed on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month for maintenance. If your Gulmarg day lands on one of those, the whole day is wasted. We check this against every itinerary before confirming.
- Slots are enforced. Slot 1 runs 08:00–11:59, Slot 2 runs 12:00–15:30. Gate entry closes at 15:30. Miss your slot and there is a ₹500 per person penalty.
- Tickets are non-transferable and the name must match your photo ID.
- Cancellation deducts 50%, must be done at least two days ahead, and refunds take 7–10 working days. No-shows get nothing.
Phase 2 carries a genuine health note: JKCCC advises travellers with cardiac conditions, asthma or high blood pressure to consult a doctor, because oxygen is thin at roughly 14,000 ft. On altitude, sources disagree — Phase 2's top station is given variously as 3,980 m, 4,200 m and 3,747 m across three pages we checked. We quote Phase 2 as approximately 3,980 m / 13,050 ft and describe Apharwat Peak as around 4,200 m, and we say plainly that the published figures conflict. Gulmarg's base resort altitude is consistent everywhere at 2,650 m / 8,694 ft (Wikipedia).
If tickets are sold out, Kongdoori is reachable on foot (4–5 km, 1.5–2.5 hours), by pony (45–60 minutes), or by ATV (₹2,500–₹3,500). It is not the same experience, but it is not a lost day either.
How many days you need
Six to seven days is the right length for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg — this is the local-operator consensus and it matches our own scheduling. Four days forces you to drop either Sonmarg or Pahalgam. Nine or ten days lets you add Doodhpathri, Yusmarg or Gurez.
Three sample itineraries
A. Kashmir Classic — 6 days / 5 nights
Day 1 — Delhi–Srinagar flight (1h35m). Transfer to a Dal Lake houseboat. Afternoon shikara ride through the floating gardens; the vegetable market runs at dawn if you're an early riser. Overnight houseboat. Day 2 — Srinagar sightseeing: Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Chashme Shahi, Shankaracharya Temple, Hazratbal. Overnight Srinagar hotel. Day 3 — Srinagar to Gulmarg (about 2 hours / 51 km). Gondola with a pre-booked slot. Overnight Gulmarg or return to Srinagar. Day 4 — Srinagar to Pahalgam (about 2.5 hours). Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari by local taxi (the Pahalgam local taxi union runs a fixed-rate system — your package vehicle cannot go up these valleys). Overnight Pahalgam. Day 5 — Pahalgam to Sonmarg day trip or Srinagar return. Thajiwas Glacier. Overnight Srinagar. Day 6 — Fly out.
B. Kashmir Unhurried — 7 days / 6 nights
The same skeleton with a night each at Gulmarg and Pahalgam instead of day trips, plus a half-day at Doodhpathri or Yusmarg — both meadows, both an hour or so from Srinagar, both dramatically quieter than Gulmarg. This is the itinerary we recommend for honeymooners who want to actually sit still somewhere.
C. Kashmir with Vaishno Devi — 8 days / 7 nights
Days 1–2 Katra and the Vaishno Devi yatra (13 km trek each way, or helicopter). Day 3 Katra–Srinagar. Days 4–7 the Kashmir Classic circuit. Day 8 fly out. Popular with families combining pilgrimage and holiday. Note that the Vande Bharat now runs Jammu Tawi–Srinagar via the Chenab Bridge, which changes how this trip can be assembled.

A useful benchmark for anyone pricing their own trip: a Srinagar–Gulmarg taxi runs about ₹3,000 for a sedan, ₹3,500–₹4,000 for an SUV and ₹6,000-plus for a Tempo Traveller.
What drives price: houseboat category (the range between a basic deluxe and a heritage houseboat is enormous), whether Gulmarg and Pahalgam are day trips or overnights, April–June and December peak dates, and Gondola Phase 2 versus Phase 1 only.
Usually included: transfers, sightseeing by private vehicle, hotel and houseboat on twin sharing, breakfast and dinner, driver allowance.
Usually excluded — and these are the ones that cause arguments at the end of the trip: Gondola tickets, the Pahalgam local union taxi to Betaab/Aru/Chandanwari, pony rides, shikara tips, Sonmarg pony or sledge, and lunch. Ask for the exclusions list in writing.
Getting there from Delhi NCR
- By air — Delhi–Srinagar is 1 hour 35 minutes, 641 km, non-stop, with around 107 flights a week across Air India, Air India Express, Akasa, IndiGo and SpiceJet. First departure around 05:15, last around 19:40 (flightconnections.com, page updated 13 Aug 2026).
- By rail — the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla link is operational, and Vande Bharat service was extended to Jammu Tawi from 2 May 2026, crossing the Chenab Bridge (the world's highest rail bridge at 359 m) and the Anji Khad cable-stayed bridge.
- By road — NH-44 from Jammu. The Mughal Road is scenic but longer, has fewer facilities and closes in peak winter.
Sonmarg is now a year-round destination. The 6.5 km Z-Morh / Sonamarg Tunnel was inaugurated on 13 January 2025 and cuts the Gagangir–Sonamarg stretch to about 15 minutes. As of June 2026 there was no toll (discoverwithdheeraj.com). Before the tunnel, Sonmarg was effectively shut for months.
Permits, documents and the SIM card problem
Indian nationals need no permit for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonmarg or Yusmarg — just a government photo ID at check-in. Gurez Valley is different: Indians need no permit but must carry ID for military checkpoints, while foreign nationals do need a special permit, arranged through the Deputy Commissioner Bandipora or an approved agency, 3–4 days in advance (travelmykashmir.com).
The single most practical thing on this page: prepaid SIM cards issued outside Jammu & Kashmir do not work in the Kashmir Valley. Only postpaid connections function. Every single trip, somebody lands in Srinagar and discovers this at the airport. Sort it before you fly, or plan to be reachable only on hotel Wi-Fi.
Food and experiences worth naming
Wazwan is the reason to come hungry. If you only eat one thing, make it rogan josh at a proper wazwan house rather than a hotel buffet. Add: nadru monje (lotus stem fritters), harissa in winter, and kahwa with saffron and crushed almond, which you will drink four times a day and miss for months afterwards.
Experiences worth the money: the dawn floating vegetable market on Dal Lake (about 5:00 am, and yes it is worth the alarm), a saffron farm visit near Pampore in late October, and a Kashmiri handicraft workshop where you watch a pashmina being woven rather than being sold one in a showroom.
Common mistakes
- Not pre-booking the Gondola, or booking a Gulmarg day that lands on the 2nd or 4th Monday.
- Carrying only a non-J&K prepaid SIM.
- Booking a houseboat purely on photographs. Houseboat quality varies more than any other accommodation category in India. Ask for the specific boat name.
- Assuming your package taxi can drive up to Betaab Valley and Aru. It cannot — the Pahalgam union system applies to everyone.
- Expecting snow in May. Snow at valley level is a December-to-February phenomenon. In May you'll find snow only at Gondola Phase 2 and Thajiwas.
- Not asking who pays if snow closes the Gulmarg road. Get the answer before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are enough for a Kashmir trip?
Six to seven days covers Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg without rushing — that is the standard local recommendation and it matches how the driving distances actually work. Four to five days means dropping one destination, usually Sonmarg. Eight or more lets you add Doodhpathri, Yusmarg or Gurez, which are far quieter than the main circuit.
What is the Gulmarg Gondola ticket price in 2026?
Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori) is ₹800, Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat) is ₹1,000, and both phases together are ₹1,800 per person. The Kongdoori chairlift is ₹300. Houseboat quality varies enormously; ask for the specific boat name and recent photographs rather than accepting a category label like "deluxe".
How far is Gulmarg from Srinagar?
About 51 km, roughly 2 hours by road, depending on traffic and weather. Pahalgam is about 2.5 hours from Srinagar, and Sonmarg is around 2.5–3 hours. All are comfortable day trips from Srinagar, though an overnight at Gulmarg or Pahalgam gives you the early morning, which is when both places are at their best.
Can my package taxi take me to Betaab Valley and Aru?
No. Pahalgam operates a local taxi union system, and only union vehicles are permitted up the Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari valleys. This is not an operator upselling you — it is a local rule that applies to every visitor. Budget for it separately, and check whether your quote includes it or excludes it.
