"Himachal package" is the most searched and least precise phrase in North Indian travel. Himachal Pradesh is not one destination — it is at least four, separated by long mountain roads, and the most common planning mistake we see is a 6-day itinerary that tries to touch three of them. Add a fifth for the initiated: the offbeat middle — Jibhi, Tirthan Valley, Shoja and Barot — small riverside villages off the Delhi–Manali highway that have become the thinking traveller's Himachal. They fit as add-ons to a Manali trip or as stand-alone slow holidays.
The rule that holds across every budget and trip length: commit to one circuit per trip (two only if you have 8+ days). Himachal's beauty is vertical, not horizontal — the hours between circuits are spent on winding roads, not in meadows.

How many days you need
- 3N/4D — one circuit, done gently: Shimla circuit, or Dharamshala–McLeod Ganj alone, or a Jibhi–Tirthan slow break. Do not attempt Manali by road in 4 days without overnight Volvos.
- 5N/6D — the standard: Shimla + Manali by road, or Dharamshala + Dalhousie, or Manali + Kasol. This is where most advertised packages sit.
- 7N/8D — two circuits without regret: Shimla–Manali–Dharamshala triangle, or Manali + Jibhi–Tirthan, or the Kinnaur loop to Kalpa and Chitkul.
- 9N/10D+ — the grand circuits: Shimla → Kinnaur → Spiti → Manali (the classic high loop, summer only), or the full Shimla–Manali–Dharamshala–Dalhousie–Amritsar sweep sold by most operators (tourmyindia.com 8N/9D).

A. Classic Himachal — Shimla + Manali, 5N/6D by private cab
Day 1 — Delhi to Shimla (340–360 km, 7–8 hrs). Evening on the Ridge and Mall Road. Overnight Shimla. Day 2 — Kufri and Naldehra excursion, Christ Church, Lakkar Bazaar. Overnight Shimla. Day 3 — Shimla to Manali (about 250 km, 7–8 hrs via Mandi and Kullu; aim to leave by 8 am). Evening on Manali Mall Road. Overnight Manali. Day 4 — Solang Valley and Atal Tunnel to Sissu (no permit needed). Overnight Manali. Day 5 — Hadimba temple, Old Manali, Vashisht; afternoon free. Overnight Manali. B. Kangra–Chamba — Dharamshala + Dalhousie, 5N/6D
Day 1 — Overnight Volvo or early drive Delhi → Dharamshala (about 470–490 km). Check in at McLeod Ganj. Evening at the Dalai Lama temple complex (Tsuglagkhang). Overnight McLeod Ganj. Day 2 — Bhagsu waterfall walk, Norbulingka Institute, St. John in the Wilderness church; sunset at Naddi viewpoint. Overnight McLeod Ganj. Day 3 — Optional half-day: Palampur tea gardens and Baijnath temple, or the Triund day-trek for the fit (about 9 km round, start early). Overnight McLeod Ganj. Day 4 — Drive to Dalhousie (about 120–130 km, 4–5 hrs). Evening at Gandhi Chowk. Overnight Dalhousie. Day 5 — Khajjiar meadow half-day (the deodar-ringed "mini Switzerland"), Panchpula. Overnight Dalhousie. Day 6 — Return to Delhi (roughly 560 km — a long day; Pathankot railhead is the smarter exit with an overnight train).
C. Offbeat Himachal — Jibhi + Tirthan, 4N/5D slow break
Day 1 — Overnight Volvo Delhi → Aut (the tunnel-mouth stop before Manali), morning cab into the Tirthan or Banjar valley (30–45 minutes). Riverside homestay. Day 2 — Jibhi waterfall, Chehni Kothi tower walk, café afternoon. Day 3 — Jalori Pass excursion (3,120 m; opens roughly April–December, snow permitting) and the Serolsar Lake walk — 5 km each way through old oak forest. Day 4 — Trout lunch, riverside idling, evening Volvo from Aut. Day 5 — Delhi by morning. This is the Himachal we recommend to people who tell us they hate crowds.

Where those numbers come from: live listings on 27 Aug 2026 showed 5N/6D Shimla–Manali packages advertised from about ₹10,999 per person (viacation.com) and Dharamshala–Dalhousie 5N/6D formats around ₹12,500 (travelsyatra.com); private-cab formats with three-star hotels run meaningfully higher. As on our Manali page: treat sub-₹8,000 multi-city "cab" packages with suspicion — at that price the vehicle is shared, the hotels are far from the action, or the excursions are all pay-on-the-spot.
What moves the price: number of circuits attempted (each adds transit hotel nights), private cab vs Volvo-plus-local-cabs, hotel category, season (May–June and Christmas week peak), and group size — a Tempo Traveller for six to eight people is the best-value format in Himachal.
Usually included: hotels with breakfast and dinner (MAP), stated transfers and sightseeing. Usually excluded: lunches, adventure activities (paragliding at Solang or Bir, rafting at Kullu — all pay-on-spot), Rohtang permits, heater charges in winter hotels, and entry tickets.
Getting there from Delhi NCR
- By road — Shimla 340–360 km (7–8 hrs); Manali 530–540 km (12–14 hrs, overnight Volvo standard); Dharamshala 470–490 km (9–10 hrs, overnight Volvos run); Dalhousie about 560 km. All private and HRTC Volvos leave Delhi in the evening from Majnu ka Tilla, Kashmere Gate and RK Ashram.
- By rail — Kalka (for the Kalka–Shimla toy train, a UNESCO-listed narrow gauge) and Pathankot (for Dharamshala–Dalhousie) are the two useful railheads. No broad-gauge line enters the Himachal interior.
- By air — Chandigarh is the dependable airport for the Shimla and Manali circuits; Gaggal/Kangra (DHM) serves Dharamshala and Bhuntar (KUU) serves Kullu–Manali, but both are small, weather-prone fields — never build a tight plan on them.
Permits — the short version
Mainstream Himachal (Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Jibhi) needs no permit of any kind for Indian or foreign tourists. The exceptions: Rohtang Pass (capped online permit — full rules on the Manali page), and the Hangrang/Spiti border stretch of the Kinnaur route, where foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit (Indians do not) — full detail on the Spiti Valley page.
Food worth planning around
Himachali food is under-sold by its own operators, so ask for it by name: siddu (steamed stuffed bread) in the Kullu–Manali belt, trout from the Tirthan and Kullu farms, a full Kangri dham (the festive plate of madra, sepu vadi and sweet rice) if you are in Kangra on the right day, Tibetan thukpa and momos done properly in McLeod Ganj, and Palampur tea bought at the garden, not the airport. Common mistakes
- Three circuits in six days. Shimla–Manali–Dharamshala in 5N/6D means three transit days out of six. One circuit, done well, beats three glimpsed from a car window.
- Judging a package by its headline price. The ₹9,999 six-day Himachal package exists to be upgraded on arrival. Compare inclusions line by line — or send us the competing quote and we will decode it, no obligation.
- Monsoon travel on the mainstream circuits without buffer days. July–August landslides on the Mandi–Kullu and Kangra roads are routine, not exceptional.
- Booking Dalhousie for adventure or Manali for peace. Match the circuit to the traveller: Dalhousie is a slow colonial hill town; Manali is a base camp with traffic.
- Ignoring the offbeat middle. If this is your second Himachal trip and you loved nothing about the crowds, Jibhi–Tirthan is the correction.
- Flying into Bhuntar or Gaggal with a same-day onward connection. These airfields cancel on cloud. Chandigarh plus road is the reliable formula.
