Why Manali still wins, and who it suits

Manali is the default North Indian hill holiday for a reason: it is the only destination within one overnight bus of Delhi where you can touch real snow for most of the year, and the only one where a 4N/5D trip delivers a river valley, a 4,000-metre pass, adventure sports and a walkable old town without a single internal flight.

It suits first-time hill travellers, honeymooners, families with children of any age, and groups of friends on a budget — the overnight Volvo keeps the cost of two hotel nights out of the bill. It suits less well: travellers who hate crowds (avoid late May–mid June and Christmas week), and anyone imagining a quiet romantic cottage on Mall Road itself. Old Manali and the Naggar side are where the quiet is.

The honest framing: Manali town is busy and commercial. The holiday happens in the 20–50 km around it — Solang, Sissu, Hampta, Naggar, Jana, Sethan. A good package is judged by how much of that ring it actually covers, not by the hotel's distance from Mall Road.

4N/5D (2 nights in Manali) — the standard Volvo format: two overnight journeys, two full days. Enough for local sightseeing plus one big excursion (Solang–Sissu or Rohtang).
5N/6D — adds Kasol–Manikaran or Naggar–Jana. The sweet spot for first-timers.
7N/8D — Manali with Shimla or with a Jibhi–Tirthan extension for those who want the quieter Himachal.

Three sample itineraries

A. Manali Classic — 4N/5D by Volvo (2 nights hotel + 2 nights bus)

Day 1 — Evening Volvo from Delhi (Majnu ka Tilla / Kashmere Gate / RK Ashram pickups). Overnight journey, roughly 12–14 hours. Day 2 — Reach Manali by late morning. Check in, lunch, then local circuit on foot or by cab: Hadimba Devi Temple, Van Vihar, Old Manali cafés, Mall Road in the evening. Overnight Manali. Days 1–3 as above. Day 4 — drive to Kasol via Kullu and Bhuntar (about 3.5 hours), visit Manikaran Sahib gurudwara and the hot springs, riverside evening in Kasol. Overnight Kasol. Day 5 — Chalal village walk in the morning, drive back to the Volvo point at Manali or board at Bhuntar. Overnight bus. Day 6 — Delhi.

C. Manali by private cab — 4N/5D for families

Day 1 — Delhi to Manali by cab (roughly 530–540 km; 12–13 hours via the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane). Start before 6 am, lunch at Sundernagar or Mandi. Overnight Manali. Day 2 — Local Manali: Hadimba, Club House, Old Manali, Mall Road. Day 3 — Solang + Atal Tunnel + Sissu; if Rohtang permits are secured, swap Sissu for Rohtang. Where those numbers come from: live listings on 27 Aug 2026 showed 4N/5D Volvo packages advertised from ₹3,999–₹5,199 at the bait end (himachaltrippackage.com, journeyofhimalaya.com) up to ₹8,599+ with better hotels (traveltriangle.com). Treat anything under ₹6,000 with suspicion: at that price the hotel is far from town, the "Volvo" may be an ordinary AC seater, and every excursion becomes a paid add-on.

What moves the price: hotel category and location (Old Manali / Log Huts area costs more than Aleo or Rangri), private cab versus Volvo (roughly doubles the per-person cost for a couple, narrows for a family of five), season (Christmas week and May–June peak), and whether Solang/Sissu excursions are genuinely included or listed as "on direct payment".

Usually included: Volvo seats both ways, hotel with breakfast and dinner (MAP), and stated sightseeing by a local cab. Usually excluded: lunches, adventure activities at Solang (paragliding, ropeway, ATV — all pay-on-spot), Rohtang permit and the special Rohtang-capable vehicle, heater charges in winter (₹300–₹500 per night in many mid-range hotels — ask), and anything described as "leisure day".

Getting there from Delhi NCR

By road — roughly 530–540 km via NH44 and the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane; 12–14 hours by overnight Volvo, 11–13 by car depending on the Mandi stretch. HRTC and private Volvos depart Delhi every evening between about 5 pm and 10 pm.
By air — nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu, KUU), 50 km from Manali; small aircraft, weather-prone, limited schedules. Most travellers fly Delhi–Chandigarh instead and drive 8–9 hours.
By rail — no railhead in the Kullu valley for mainline trains; Chandigarh is the practical railhead, then road.

Permits: Rohtang vs Atal Tunnel — the confusion that ruins trips

The single most common Manali complaint is "we were promised Rohtang and didn't get it". Here is the actual rule set:

Rohtang Pass needs a permit; the Atal Tunnel route to Sissu does not. The permit is issued online at rohtangpermits.nic.in and daily numbers are capped by NGT order at 1,200 vehicles beyond the Gulaba barrier (800 petrol + 400 diesel) (manalitourplanner.com, chalotravellers.com).
The tourism permit fee is ₹550 per vehicle plus a small congestion charge; quota is released online in shifts and sells out fast in season (manaliweather.com).
Travellers continuing beyond Rohtang to Lahaul, Spiti or Leh need only the nominal congestion fee, not the capped sightseeing permit.
Vehicles older than 10 years are refused; a printed permit is compulsory.
NGT rules also ban snow-scooter and horse rides at Rohtang itself — activity touts at Marhi are unofficial.
Rohtang is open only roughly May/June to October/November depending on snow. Outside that window, Sissu via the Atal Tunnel is the snow point — and it needs nothing.

Common mistakes

Booking a ₹3,999 package and expecting a holiday. That price buys bus seats and a remote hotel; everything else becomes an on-the-spot upsell.
Promising children Rohtang in April. The pass typically opens in May; in April Sissu is the snow answer.
Assuming "Volvo" means Volvo. Ask for the operator name and bus type in writing; many budget packages quietly substitute ordinary coaches.
Travelling in July–August without a buffer day. The Mandi–Kullu highway stretch is landslide-prone in monsoon.
