The islands are a different Thailand — treat them as one
Bangkok–Pattaya is Thailand's entry ticket. Phuket–Krabi is the Thailand people actually have on their phone wallpapers — limestone cliffs rising out of green water, longtail boats, Phi Phi, Railay. We keep this page separate from our main Thailand page for a simple reason: the island trip has different economics, a different season, and different failure modes. The most common way Delhi travellers ruin it is planning it like a city trip — cramming bases, ignoring the monsoon, and treating the Phuket–Krabi transfer as an afterthought.
The visa, in one line: Thailand is visa-free for Indian passport holders (60 days as of our 27 August 2026 check, becoming 30 days once the gazetted change lands — visa-free either way), and every traveller must file the free TDAC digital arrival card online within 72 hours before arrival. Phuket and Krabi are 160 km apart — why do both?
Because they are genuinely different holidays sharing one sea.
Phuket is Thailand's biggest island and its most developed resort machine: an international airport, hundreds of hotels at every price, Patong's nightlife, Old Phuket Town's Sino-Portuguese streets, the Big Buddha, and the widest choice of day cruises — Phi Phi, Similan (seasonal), James Bond Island. It is convenient, complete, and in places crowded and commercial.
Krabi — in practice the Ao Nang / Railay stretch of the mainland coast plus its islands — is the scenery. The limestone karst cliffs that define southern Thailand photography are here, and Railay's beaches, reachable only by longtail boat, are the single most dramatic setting in the country. Krabi is quieter, slower and noticeably cheaper on the ground than Phuket; its trade-off is fewer big-resort choices and a smaller nightlife.
Do both and you get the machine and the scenery in one trip. Do only one and the honest guidance is: nightlife and variety → Phuket alone; scenery, couples, calm → Krabi alone, and fly via Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur.
The Phuket–Krabi transfer — the detail that decides whether your week flows
Three ways across, checked August 2026:
- Road (our default in every season). About 160 km, 2.5–3.5 hours by private car or van over the Sarasin bridge and down the mainland coast. Door to door from your Phuket hotel to your Ao Nang hotel, runs in any weather, and costs a fraction of what people assume — a private car is typically in the 2,500–3,500 baht range for the whole vehicle. This is what we build into packages.
- Ferry. Direct boats run from Phuket's Rassada Pier toward Krabi — roughly 1.5–3 hours on the water depending on operator and pier, many routings calling at Phi Phi en route, which can double as your Phi Phi visit. Two honest caveats: adding hotel-to-pier transfers on both sides usually makes the total time similar to the road, and boats get cancelled in monsoon weather (May–October). Schedules and operators change season to season — we confirm the sailing before we sell it, and you should too if booking independently.
- Flying Phuket–Krabi means backtracking through Bangkok. Nobody should do this; ignore any itinerary that suggests it.
Our standing build: land in Phuket, do Phuket first, road-transfer to Krabi mid-trip, and fly home out of Krabi (via a connection) or transfer back to Phuket airport if fares are better. Ending in Krabi means your last memory is Railay, not Patong traffic.
Best time to visit Phuket–Krabi — the season matters more here than anywhere in Thailand
Both sit on the Andaman coast and share one calendar. The difference from a Bangkok trip is that here the weather doesn't just dampen the trip — it cancels the boats that are the point of it.

November to April is the trip. May to October, the resorts stay open, prices drop hard, red flags fly on beaches, and boat operators cancel on the morning of. We do sell monsoon Phuket–Krabi to travellers who understand the deal — pool-and-spa resort time at half price with island days as a bonus if weather allows — but we refuse to sell a September trip to anyone whose heart is set on Phi Phi. The Similan Islands national park, for divers and snorkellers, is formally closed roughly mid-May to mid-October every year.
How many days do you actually need?
Six nights is the honest number: three Phuket, three Krabi, one island day-cruise from each, one buffer day for weather or recovery. Five nights works if you compress Phuket to two. Four nights means choosing one base — do Krabi. Honeymooners stretching to seven or eight nights should add the extra nights in Krabi, not Phuket.
Three Phuket–Krabi itineraries that actually run
Itinerary A — 6N/7D Phuket (3N) + Krabi (3N): the standard build
Day 1 — Arrive Phuket. Land, check in, sunset at Karon or Kata beach — gentler first evening than Patong. Overnight Phuket. Day 2 — Phi Phi Islands day cruise. Full day by speedboat, or the slower big boat if anyone gets seasick — Maya Bay (viewing rules vary by season), Pileh lagoon, snorkelling stops. Overnight Phuket. Day 3 — Phuket land day. Big Buddha viewpoint and Old Phuket Town morning, Wat Chalong, evening free — Bangla Road for friends' groups, a beach dinner for couples and families. Overnight Phuket. Day 4 — Road transfer to Krabi (2.5–3 hrs), afternoon at Ao Nang. Sunset longtail ride or simply the beachfront. Overnight Ao Nang. Day 5 — Four Islands tour. Krabi's signature day: Phra Nang Cave beach, Chicken Island, Poda, and the Thale Waek sandbar that appears at low tide — by shared longtail or speedboat; group tours run around the 400–700 baht mark plus the national park fee (about 200–400 baht), lunch usually included. Overnight Ao Nang. Day 6 — Railay morning. Longtail from Ao Nang (10–15 minutes), Railay West beach and the Phra Nang cave shrine; afternoon spa or the Tiger Cave Temple for the fit (1,260 steps). Overnight Ao Nang. Day 7 — Depart from Krabi airport, or transfer back to Phuket if fares favour it.
Itinerary B — 5N/6D Krabi-weighted: the honeymoon build
Phuket 2N (arrival + Phi Phi cruise) → Krabi 3N with a Railay-view or quieter Klong Muang / Tubkaak resort instead of central Ao Nang, the Four Islands day done by private longtail, one Hong Islands day trip (the lagoon is the quietest of the famous sights), and a couples' dinner on the sand. The private-longtail upgrade costs little and removes the tour-group feel — it is the single best money-to-romance conversion in southern Thailand.
Itinerary C — 7N/8D with Koh Lanta or Khao Lak: the slow trip
Itinerary A plus two nights on Koh Lanta (ferry from Krabi, beach-village pace, superb for long stays) in season, or Khao Lak north of Phuket for Similan access in the November–April window. This is the repeat-visitor build — nobody needs it on a first trip.
What a Phuket–Krabi trip really costs from Delhi

The bottom of the range is a 3-star November or March trip with group tours; the top is a 4-star December–January build with speedboat cruises and the private transfer throughout. Note this runs ₹15,000–25,000 above an equivalent Bangkok–Pattaya week: island hotels cost more, the two big day-cruises are paid products, and peak-season Andaman airfares are real. Listings you will see at "₹30,000 Phuket–Krabi" are land-only — the flight is the missing line.

Flights from Delhi
Delhi–Phuket is around 5 hours when a nonstop operates; otherwise one stop via Bangkok (Delhi–Bangkok ~4.5 hrs + a 1h20 hop). Krabi has no nonstop from India — connections run via Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur on full-service and low-cost carriers. Thailand is 1.5 hours ahead of IST.
Currency and daily spend
Baht, as on the Thailand page — roughly ₹2.6–2.8 to the baht in August 2026, check the day's rate. Island-trip specifics: budget the two day-cruises (roughly 1,200–2,500 baht per person each depending on boat class), national park fees in cash, and 100-baht longtail hops around Ao Nang–Railay. ₹2,500–4,000 per person per day beyond the package covers a comfortable island week; Krabi days run cheaper than Phuket days. Cards work in hotels and malls; beach restaurants and longtails want cash.
Honeymoon, family, friends — how the trip changes shape
Honeymooners: this is the Thailand honeymoon, full stop — Itinerary B. Spend on the private longtail and one sea-view upgrade rather than a fifth excursion. Families: entirely workable — pick the big boat over the speedboat for Phi Phi, base in Karon/Kata rather than Patong, and keep one boat day per base, not two back to back. Small children and long speedboat days do not mix. Friends' groups: Phuket-weighted split (4N Phuket, 2N Krabi), Patong within reach but not around the corner, and the group discount on private speedboat charters becomes real at eight-plus people. Food — the vegetarian and Jain reality
Same rules as mainland Thailand, with a better safety net than you might expect: Phuket's Indian restaurant scene is large (Patong, Karon and Phuket Town all have long-running Indian kitchens), and Ao Nang's tourist strip includes several Indian and halal-Indian restaurants with full vegetarian menus. On boats, the included buffet lunch usually has rice, fried vegetables and fruit, but fish sauce hides in "vegetable" dishes — say "no fish sauce, no oyster sauce, no egg" clearly, and look for "jay" (เจ) signage for Thai vegan food, strongest around Phuket Town's Chinese-Thai shrines. Jain travellers: possible with pre-planning, hard as a walk-in — the island buffets are the weak point, so we pre-arrange packed Jain meals for cruise days and brief the hotels; tell us at enquiry, not at the pier.
What NOT to do in Phuket–Krabi
- Do not book a monsoon trip for the islands. May–October boats cancel at the operator's discretion, on the morning of. Book those months for the resort, and treat boat days as a bonus.
- Do not rent a scooter without an international driving permit and helmet — Phuket's police checkpoints fine tourists daily, and insurance is void without a licence. Krabi's roads are hillier than they look.
- Do not swim past red flags. Monsoon rip currents on Andaman beaches kill tourists every year, mostly strong swimmers who ignored the flags.
- Do not hand your passport as a scooter or jet-ski deposit — the damage-claim scam is decades old and still running in Patong.
- Do not day-trip Railay in the afternoon — go morning; the tide, the light and the crowds are all better, and afternoon longtail queues back up.
- Do not book "Maya Bay guaranteed" — access and boat rules at Maya Bay change seasonally under the national park's restoration regime; itineraries adjust, and any operator guaranteeing it year-round is guessing.
Common mistakes Delhi travellers make
Doing three bases in six nights and spending the holiday packing. Booking September because the price looked unbeatable, then watching the pier's cancellation board. Taking the speedboat with a seasick parent when the big boat existed. Comparing a land-only ₹30,000 listing against a with-flights quote as if they were the same product. And skipping Krabi entirely because Phuket has the airport — the scenery you came for is 160 km east.

Phi Phi or the Four Islands tour — which is better?
Do one from each base. Phi Phi (from Phuket) is the bigger, more famous, more crowded day — cliffs, lagoons, the long speedboat ride. The Four Islands tour (from Krabi) is shorter, cheaper, calmer — Phra Nang cave beach, Chicken Island and the low-tide sandbar. Honeymooners should also consider Krabi's quieter Hong Islands trip.
Is Railay worth it?
Yes — it is the single most dramatic beach setting in Thailand, walled by limestone cliffs and reachable only by a 10–15 minute longtail from Ao Nang. Go in the morning for tide, light and thinner crowds. You don't need to stay there for it to work; a half-day visit from Ao Nang covers Railay West and Phra Nang beach.
Is Phuket–Krabi good for a honeymoon?
It is the classic Thai honeymoon: 2N Phuket + 3–4N Krabi, a private longtail for the islands day, one sea-view upgrade. Can families and seniors do this trip?
Yes, with the right boats. Choose big-boat cruises over speedboats, keep one boat day per base, base in Karon/Kata or Ao Nang rather than nightlife zones, and know that longtail boarding sometimes means wading in from the shallows — we plan pier-boarding tours for seniors who prefer to stay dry.
Is vegetarian and Jain food available in Phuket and Krabi?

Should we add Koh Lanta or Khao Lak?
Only with seven-plus nights, and only in season. Koh Lanta (ferry from Krabi) suits slow beach-village stays; Khao Lak suits Similan Islands snorkelling in its November–April open window. On a first six-night trip, adding a third base costs more in packing and transfers than it returns.
