Start in the capital with the headline pair - the Qutub Minar and Humayun's Tomb, the tomb being the Taj's direct architectural ancestor - then an evening drive past India Gate and the Rashtrapati Bhavan avenue when the lights and the ice-cream carts both come out.
Two Delhis in one day: Old Delhi in the morning - Chandni Chowk's parantha lanes, the Jama Masjid quarter and its Mughlai kitchens - and New Delhi's boulevards and museums after lunch. Comfortable shoes and an empty stomach are the only preparation that matters.
Leave by 7 am for the Yamuna Expressway run to Agra, checked in before midday. Agra Fort takes the afternoon - a full Mughal palace-fortress most visitors rush - and Mehtab Bagh takes the sunset, with the Taj glowing across the river as your free preview of tomorrow.

Jaipur before departure: Amber Fort at the 8 am opening while the courtyards echo, a Jal Mahal photo pause, and the Hawa Mahal facade. Leave the pink city by mid-afternoon - the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway has you back in NCR in about 3.5 hours, trip complete.
