The Taj Mahal is the reason, and it is worth stating plainly: it is one of the very few famous buildings that is better in person than in photographs. The proportions do something that a lens flattens out.
But Agra is not a one-monument city. Agra Fort is a full Mughal palace-fortress that most day-trippers rush in ninety minutes. Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km west, is an entire abandoned imperial capital. Itimad-ud-Daulah — the "Baby Taj" — is the most refined pietra dura work in India and is nearly always empty. Mehtab Bagh gives you the Taj across the Yamuna at sunset with a fraction of the crowd.
Who it suits: everyone doing India for the first time. NCR residents wanting a long day out. Families with parents visiting. Photographers, particularly for sunrise. Anyone with a single spare day between Delhi meetings.
Who should think twice: travellers who dislike crowds and cannot manage an early start, and anyone travelling in May or June with small children.

Opening days. Closed every Friday. Open all other weekdays. Every other monument in Agra is open seven days a week.
Opening hours. Not a fixed clock time — 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset. In practice that is roughly 6:00–6:15 am in winter and closer to 5:45 am in June. Ticket counters open about an hour before sunrise and close roughly 45 minutes before sunset.

Book online and pay less. Buying through the ASI portal gives a ₹5 discount per Indian ticket and ₹50 per foreign ticket. Window ticketing is also available. The portal is asi.payumoney.com.
Notice the Friday column. Because the Taj is shut, the Agra Development Authority component is not levied at the other monuments — Agra Fort drops from ₹50 to ₹40 for Indians and foreigners drop from ₹650 to ₹600. A Friday in Agra is a cheaper day, not a wasted one, provided you have made peace with not seeing the Taj.
Five nights per lunar month: the full moon night plus the two nights before and the two after. Timing 20:00 to 23:59 in eight batches of maximum 50 people, 30 minutes each. Booked separately in advance through asi.paygov.org.in, not the day-ticket portal.

The one-night version is disproportionately better than the day trip because it unlocks two things a day trip cannot have: sunset at Mehtab Bagh and sunrise at the Taj. Those are the two best hours in Agra and a day trip gets neither.
Day 1. Leave NCR at 8:00 am, reach Agra by around 11:30. Lunch and check in. Agra Fort in the afternoon (2 hours). Itimad-ud-Daulah at around 4:00 pm — 20 minutes and almost nobody there. Mehtab Bagh for sunset across the river. Optional evening: the Mohabbat-e-Taj show at Kalakriti Theatre. Overnight Agra.
Day 2. Taj Mahal at opening — this is the entire reason for the overnight. Back to the hotel for breakfast at around 9:30. Check out, drive to Fatehpur Sikri (40 km, about 1 hour) by 11:30, allow 2 hours including the shuttle from the parking area. Depart by 2:00 pm, back in NCR by around 6:30 pm.
Day 1: NCR → Mathura (Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish) → Vrindavan (Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir, ISKCON) → overnight Vrindavan or Mathura. Day 2: → Agra (approx. 60 km, 1.5 hrs). Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh sunset. Overnight Agra. Day 3: Taj at sunrise, Fatehpur Sikri, back to NCR.
Mathura and Vrindavan sit almost exactly on the Yamuna Expressway between Delhi and Agra, which makes this the most road-efficient combination in the whole cluster — you are not adding a detour, you are adding a stop.

By road — the Yamuna Expressway. This is the only sensible route. Around 230 km total from central Delhi, and a realistic door-to-door time of 3 to 3.5 hours including one stop. From Gurugram, take the Eastern Peripheral Expressway to Jewar and join there — it avoids Delhi entirely and is the single biggest time-saver available on this route.
Toll and FASTag. FASTag has been mandatory on the Yamuna Expressway since 15 June 2021. Expect roughly ₹400–₹500 one way for a car. Useful detail most people miss: a return journey completed within 24 hours is charged at about 1.6× the one-way rate, not 2×. If you are doing a same-day trip, that discount applies automatically — just make sure you exit within the window.
By train. Delhi–Agra is one of India's fastest rail corridors, with Vande Bharat and Shatabdi-class services reaching Agra Cantt in roughly two hours. For a same-day Taj visit without a car, this is genuinely the better option — take the early train, hire a car locally for the day, return in the evening.
Local transport in Agra. The Taj Mahal complex sits inside a restricted emission zone — motor vehicles cannot approach the gates directly, and the last stretch is by electric shuttle, battery rickshaw or on foot. Build 15–20 minutes into your plan for this at both ends. Agra also now has a metro service.
Taj Ganj — walking distance to the east and south gates. Basic, cheap, and unbeatable if you want to be at the gate at opening without a vehicle. Fatehabad Road — the main mid-range and 4-star strip, best food options, 10–15 minutes from the Taj. Taj East Gate Road — premium properties, several with genuine Taj views from upper floors. Book the view explicitly; it is never automatic. Practical note: if your plan is sunrise at the Taj, staying within 10 minutes of a gate matters more than the hotel's star rating.
Petha — the translucent ash-gourd sweet Agra is known for. Buy it from the established shops in Sadar Bazaar, not the highway service areas; the difference in quality is obvious. Mughlai food along Fatehabad Road and in the old city near Jama Masjid — kebabs, korma, biryani. Dalmoth, the spiced lentil mixture, is Agra's other export. Bedai and jalebi for a proper Agra breakfast, which is what most tourists miss entirely because they eat at the hotel.

Sunrise, without close competition. The light is softer, the marble changes colour as the sun comes up, the crowds are at their smallest and the temperature is bearable even in summer. Late afternoon is the second-best window. Midday is the worst on every measure — heat, haze and peak crowds.
Drone cameras are strictly prohibited in and around the Taj Mahal. Tripods require prior written permission from the Archaeological Survey of India and will be refused at the gate without it. Handheld phone and camera photography is fine in the gardens. Photography inside the main mausoleum chamber is not permitted.
About 40 km west, roughly an hour by road. Entry for Indian visitors is ₹50 on normal weekdays and ₹40 on Fridays, and it is open seven days a week. Allow two hours including the shuttle ride from the car park to the monument complex. It fits naturally into the return leg of an Agra-to-Jaipur or Agra-to-Delhi drive.
