Why this circuit, and who it suits
Shimla and Manali are different holidays that happen to share a state. Shimla is a colonial-era ridge town — heritage buildings, a pedestrian Mall, views over cedar forests, everything walkable. Manali is a valley-floor adventure base — river, snow points, activity parks. Doing both in one trip gives first-time hill travellers the full Himachal sampler, which is why this remains the single most-booked circuit in North India.
It suits honeymooners (the classic reason), families showing children the mountains for the first time, and anyone from Delhi NCR with exactly one week. It suits less well: repeat Himachal visitors (go to Jibhi, Tirthan or Spiti instead — see our Himachal page), and travellers who dislike long road days, because the Shimla–Manali leg is a genuine 7–8 hour drive.
The honest framing most operators skip: Kullu is not a stay destination on this circuit. It is the district you drive through between Shimla and Manali — you stop at the Kullu shawl factories, maybe raft a stretch of the Beas at Pirdi, and continue. Packages that advertise "a night in Kullu" are usually placing you in a highway hotel to save money.

How many days you need
- 5N/6D — the working minimum: 2 nights Shimla, 3 nights Manali (or 2, with one night lost to the overnight Volvo each way).
- 6N/7D — the comfortable version; adds Kasol–Manikaran or a Naggar day.
- 7N/8D — adds Chandigarh (Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake) as a first or last stop, or a Chail–Kufri day for deodar-forest quiet above Shimla.
Three sample itineraries
A. Classic circuit — 5N/6D (Volvo in, Volvo out)
Day 1 — Overnight Volvo Delhi→Shimla (roughly 9–10 hours) or the toy-train option below. Reach by morning. Day 2 — Shimla local on foot: the Ridge, Christ Church, Mall Road, Gaiety Theatre, Jakhoo Temple (steep 30-minute climb or ropeway). Overnight Shimla. Day 3 — Kufri excursion in the morning (16 km; in snow months the last stretch is by local 4x4 or on foot), then depart for Manali via Mandi — about 7–8 hours with a Sundernagar lunch halt. Overnight Manali. Day 4 — Solang Valley plus Atal Tunnel to Sissu. Overnight Manali. Day 5 — Hadimba Temple, Old Manali, Vashisht morning; Kullu shawl-factory stop en route to the evening Volvo. B. Toy-train honeymoon — 6N/7D
Day 1 — Morning train Delhi→Kalka, then the Kalka–Shimla narrow-gauge railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line that climbs 96 km through 100-plus tunnels. The Himalayan Queen (dep. Kalka around 12:10 pm, arr. Shimla about 5:30 pm) connects with a Delhi morning train; the Shivalik Deluxe (dep. 5:20 am, ~₹510) is the premium ride (travelcoffee.in toy-train guide, shimlatourism.co.in). Overnight Shimla. Day 2 — Shimla heritage walk + Jakhoo. Day 3 — Kufri and Chail day. Day 4 — Drive to Manali; Pirdi rafting stop if the river is running. Day 5 — Solang + Sissu. C. Family circuit by private cab — 6N/7D
Day 1 — Delhi→Chandigarh (250 km), afternoon at Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake. Overnight Chandigarh. Day 2 — Chandigarh→Shimla (115 km, 4 hours); evening Mall Road. Day 3 — Kufri morning, Shimla afternoon. Day 4 — Shimla→Manali (250 km, 7–8 hours). Day 5 — Solang + Atal Tunnel. Day 6 — Manali local morning, then descend to Chandigarh or Kasauli for the night to break the return. Day 7 — Home to Delhi NCR. One vehicle throughout, no overnight buses — the right format with children or grandparents.

What moves the price: hotel category in Shimla (heritage properties on the Ridge cost multiples of Sanjauli-side hotels), private cab for the full circuit versus Volvo + local cabs, season, and whether the Shimla–Manali transfer is a private vehicle or a seat-in-coach shuttle. Usually included: MAP meals, stated sightseeing, transfers. Getting there from Delhi NCR
- Delhi→Shimla by road: roughly 340–360 km, 8–10 hours; overnight and morning Volvos run daily.
- Delhi→Kalka by rail + toy train: the flagship option; Kalka is ~5 hours from Delhi by train, then 5 hours up the narrow gauge.
- By air: Shimla's Jubbarhal airport has thin, weather-prone service; Chandigarh (IXC) is the practical airport for the circuit's start.
- The circuit direction matters: Shimla first, Manali second is the standard flow — it puts the longest drive mid-trip and lets you exit Manali by overnight Volvo, landing in Delhi with a full day in hand.
Permits and practical notes
No permits are needed anywhere on this circuit except Rohtang Pass (online, capped — full detail on our Manali page). Two practical notes instead: Shimla's core is pedestrian-only, so hotels "on Mall Road" involve a walk from the nearest vehicle point with luggage — porters are available and worth it. And Kufri in peak snow operates on local pony/4x4 mafias' terms; agree prices before starting, or skip Kufri for Narkanda (64 km, quieter, better views) if you have a private vehicle.
Food and experiences worth naming
In Shimla: coffee and pastries in a heritage café on the Mall, chana-bhatura at the Indian Coffee House on the Ridge — an institution since the 1950s, sidhu and channa madra if you find a Himachali dham thali. The toy train itself is the experience worth paying for; sit on the left side going up for the valley views. In between: Kullu shawls (check for the Kullu GI weave, not powerloom copies) and river rafting at Pirdi (roughly 14 km of the Beas, seasonal). Common mistakes
- Trying the circuit in 4 days. With a 7–8 hour Shimla–Manali leg in the middle, four days is a driving tour, not a holiday.
- Doing Manali first. You spend the trip's freshest day on the longest highway stretch and end in Shimla's traffic for the return.
- Booking "3-star" Shimla hotels sight unseen. Distance from a vehicle drop point matters more than star count; ask exactly how far the hotel is from the nearest road access.
- Assuming the toy train can be booked last-minute. The Shivalik Deluxe and Himalayan Queen chair cars sell out weeks ahead in season; book on IRCTC the day plans firm up.
- Letting the operator quietly swap the Shimla–Manali private transfer for a shared shuttle. Get the vehicle type per leg in writing.
- Ignoring monsoon geometry. In July–August both highways on this circuit are landslide-prone; if dates are fixed, build in a buffer day.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are enough for Shimla Kullu Manali?
Five nights / six days is the realistic minimum: two nights Shimla, three Manali (or two, using overnight Volvos both ways). Six to seven days lets you add Kasol, Naggar or Chail without rushing. Four days or fewer turns the trip into back-to-back highway journeys — we do not recommend it.
What does a Shimla Manali package cost from Delhi?

Shimla first or Manali first?
Shimla first. It is closer to Delhi, so the short leg comes when you are freshest; the long Shimla–Manali drive lands mid-trip; and you exit Manali on an overnight Volvo, reaching Delhi with a full day to recover. Reverse order works only for travellers flying into Chandigarh and out of Bhuntar.
Is the Kalka Shimla toy train worth it?
Yes — it is the one genuinely world-class experience on this circuit, a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge line climbing 96 km through more than a hundred tunnels. The Himalayan Queen connects with a Delhi morning train; the Shivalik Deluxe is the premium early ride. Book on IRCTC well ahead; chair cars sell out in season.
When is there snow at Kufri and Solang?
Dependably January–February, usually mid-December to early March at both. Kufri's snow point in peak winter is reached by local 4x4 or on foot. Outside winter, Kufri is a viewpoint-and-pony stop, and the snow answer near Manali is Sissu via the Atal Tunnel or Rohtang when open.
Is this circuit good for a honeymoon?
It is the classic Indian honeymoon circuit, and it works if you pick hotels for privacy: Mashobra or Chail side near Shimla, Old Manali or the Naggar road in Manali. Ask for the honeymoon inclusions in writing — most operators' "candlelight dinner" is a decorated table at the regular buffet.
How long is the drive from Shimla to Manali?
About 250 km and 7–8 hours in normal conditions via Bilaspur–Sundernagar–Mandi–Kullu, including stops. Add time in monsoon or peak-season weekend traffic through Mandi. Break it with lunch at Sundernagar and the Kullu shawl-factory or Pirdi rafting stop.
Do we need any permits for this circuit?
No — not for Shimla, Kufri, Kullu, Manali, Solang or the Atal Tunnel route to Sissu. The only permit on the map is Rohtang Pass: online at rohtangpermits.nic.in, ₹550 per vehicle, daily quota capped, open roughly May–November. Treat Rohtang as a bonus, not a promise.
Can this trip be done by public transport?
Yes, and comfortably: Volvo or toy train to Shimla, HRTC/private Volvo Shimla→Manali (about 8–9 hours), overnight Volvo back to Delhi, with local cabs for excursions. It costs less than a package but you handle five separate bookings — the package's value is stitching them together.
What should honeymooners budget extra for?
Toy-train chair-car tickets, Solang activities (paragliding, ropeway), a private candlelight dinner if you actually want a private one, heater charges in winter hotels, and a room-category upgrade in Shimla — the view rooms on the valley side are worth the difference and rarely included in base packages.
