Land in Leh before the winds rise, and surrender the day to acclimatisation at 3,256 metres: water in steady litres, no alcohol, no stairs you can avoid. If the head stays clear by sunset, the Main Bazaar's slow evening circuit is the only outing that earns approval.

Work through the approved low-altitude circuit - Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, Hall of Fame - and keep the afternoon idle on Changspa Road's cafe verandas. This second night in Leh is what makes tomorrow's 5,359-metre crossing routine instead of risky.

Take Khardung La in the morning cold and reach Nubra by early afternoon - five hours of hairpins, prayer flags and widening valley. Diskit Monastery first for the Maitreya's gaze down the valley, then Hunder for a camel-side sunset on the dunes.

A full day inside Nubra, the luxury shorter circuits skip: linger at the dunes, explore Diskit properly, or drive out to Turtuk - about three hours each way - the Balti village of apricot orchards near the border that most Indians have never heard named. Ask for chhutagi at dinner; it rarely reaches printed menus.

Follow the Shyok's bends toward Pangong Tso - six to seven hours of honest road - and arrive for the late light show on the water. The lake sits above 14,000 feet; nights at the Spangmik and Merak camps drop hard, so wear everything warm you brought.

Catch the lake's early colours, then ride Chang La back toward Leh in five to six hours, pausing at Thiksey and Shey where the Indus valley turns green. Arrival by evening leaves room for farewell shopping and one last monastery-silhouette sunset.

The customary early Leh departure, with airport margins padded for mountain weather. Six nights, two great valleys and one impossible lake - the full-circuit version of Ladakh that shorter itineraries quietly envy. Fit the last jars of apricot jam between the woollens, check the boarding time twice against the weather, and take the window seat without apology.
