Why Kerala, and who it actually suits
Kerala works because you get four completely different landscapes inside 550 km of driving — a colonial port city, tea hills at 1,600 m, a spice-forest lake, and a backwater network you sleep on. Very few Indian states give you that much variation without an internal flight.
It suits couples first. Roughly seven out of ten Kerala enquiries we field from Delhi NCR are honeymoons, and the reason is structural: the route has a natural rhythm — two nights in cold hill air, then two nights at sea level with a houseboat in the middle. It suits families with children over six, who will enjoy the boat and the elephants but will get restless on the Munnar–Thekkady stretch. It suits parents in their sixties well, because the walking is optional almost everywhere.
It does not suit a group of friends looking for nightlife. Kerala's dry-day and licensing rules are stricter than Goa's, and the hill towns shut early. Send that group to Goa instead.
Best time to visit Kerala — month by month
The India Meteorological Department's normal onset date for the southwest monsoon over Kerala is 1 June; in 2026 the onset was declared on 4 June. That single date governs the whole calendar.

The sweet spot most people miss is late September to early November. The land is still monsoon-green, the crowds have not arrived, and hotel rates sit noticeably below December. December 20 to January 5 is the single most expensive window of the year and should be quoted separately.
How many days do you actually need from Delhi?
Be honest about the arithmetic. Delhi to Kochi is roughly a 3-hour nonstop flight, and once you add airport time at both ends, a "day 1" arriving on a morning flight gives you an afternoon, not a day. Then Kochi to Munnar is a 4 to 4.5 hour drive over 130 km — the ghat section is slow by design.
- 4 nights or fewer: not worth the airfare. You will spend a third of the trip in a car.
- 5 nights / 6 days: the minimum that works. Two hill nights, one lake or spice night, one houseboat night, one coastal night. Tight but complete.
- 7 nights / 8 days: the version we recommend. Adds a proper beach stretch at Kovalam or Marari and takes the pressure off every transfer.
- 9 nights or more: only if you are adding Wayanad, Varkala, or a slow Ayurveda stay.
A common Delhi-side mistake is booking a late-evening flight into Kochi and still expecting to reach Munnar the same night. Do not — that is a mountain road after dark. Overnight in Kochi and drive up in the morning.
Three sample Kerala itineraries
Itinerary A — 5 nights / 6 days: the classic circuit
Day 1 — Delhi to Kochi (Cochin). Arrive COK. Transfer to Fort Kochi, 45–60 min depending on traffic through the bypass. Afternoon walking the Dutch Palace and Jew Town lanes; sunset at the Chinese fishing nets. Overnight Kochi.
Day 2 — Kochi to Munnar (130 km, 4–4.5 hrs). Start by 8.30 am. Stop at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls on the ghat road. Reach Munnar by early afternoon; tea-estate walk in the evening. Overnight Munnar.
Day 3 — Munnar full day. Eravikulam National Park in the morning (it opens at 7.30 am; the park closes for around 45–60 days across February–March for Nilgiri tahr calving). Then Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point, Kundala. Tata Tea Museum if it rains. Overnight Munnar.
Day 4 — Munnar to Thekkady (90 km, 3.5–4 hrs). Slow road, spice-plantation country. Afternoon boat ride on Periyar Lake and a spice-garden walk. Overnight Thekkady.
Day 5 — Thekkady to Alleppey houseboat (140 km, 4 hrs). Board around noon. The boat cruises the Punnamada and Vembanad channels through the afternoon, moors overnight. All meals cooked on board. Overnight houseboat.
Day 6 — Alleppey to Kochi and fly out (55 km, 1.5 hrs). Disembark 9 am. Transfer to COK for an afternoon or evening flight to Delhi.
Itinerary B — 7 nights / 8 days: honeymoon pace with a beach
Days 1–5 as above, then:
Day 6 — Alleppey to Marari or Kovalam. Marari is 25 minutes from Alleppey and quieter; Kovalam is 3.5–4 hrs south and livelier, with Trivandrum (TRV) as your exit airport. Overnight beach.
Day 7 — Beach day. Nothing scheduled. Ayurvedic massage, a catamaran hour, a long lunch. This is the day people actually remember.
Day 8 — Fly Delhi from Kochi (if Marari) or Trivandrum (if Kovalam). Trivandrum to Delhi is roughly 3 hours 15 minutes nonstop.
Itinerary C — 4 nights / 5 days: hills and water only, no city
For repeat visitors or anyone short on leave.
Day 1 Kochi arrival, drive straight to Munnar if landing before 11 am; otherwise overnight Kochi. Day 2 Munnar sightseeing. Day 3 Munnar to Thekkady, evening lake boat. Day 4 Thekkady to Alleppey, board houseboat. Day 5 Disembark, drive to COK, fly out. Skips Fort Kochi entirely — a genuine loss, but a defensible one.

What moves the price
- Flights. Delhi–Kochi return is usually the single biggest line item and swings by a factor of two between a September Tuesday and 27 December.
- Houseboat category. Public rate cards in 2026 put a private one-bedroom overnight boat in roughly three bands — deluxe around ₹9,000–₹12,000, premium around ₹13,000–₹18,000, and luxury from about ₹19,000 upward, per boat per night. Weekend rates run several thousand above midweek for the same boat.
- Hotel tier. A 3-star Munnar property and a plantation-view resort are a ₹4,000–₹9,000 per night gap.
- Vehicle. A sedan for two versus a Tempo Traveller for eight changes per-head cost sharply. Groups get cheaper per person.
- Dates. Christmas–New Year and long weekends carry surcharges everywhere.
Typically included
Airport transfers, all inter-city transfers by private air-conditioned vehicle with driver, hotel accommodation on twin sharing, daily breakfast, one night on a houseboat with lunch, dinner and next-day breakfast, driver allowances, tolls and parking.
Typically excluded
Airfare unless specifically quoted with it, GST and TCS, monument and park entry fees, boat rides at Periyar, guide charges, camera fees, Ayurveda treatments, anything personal, and travel insurance. Ask any operator to put exclusions in writing before you pay. We do.
Getting to Kerala from Delhi NCR
By air — the only sensible option. Delhi to Kochi (COK) is roughly 3 hours nonstop; Delhi to Trivandrum (TRV) roughly 3 hours 15 minutes. Calicut (CCJ) works if you are heading to Wayanad. Fly into Kochi and out of Trivandrum on a 7-night trip — it saves a full day of backtracking and usually costs about the same.
By train — think hard. Delhi to Ernakulam is a two-night journey on the fastest services. It is a genuine experience and it is cheap, but it costs you two of your holiday days each way. It makes sense only if you have 10+ days or a specific reason to avoid flying.
The realistic tradeoff: flying costs more but buys you two extra days in Kerala. On a 6-day trip, that is a third of your holiday.
Kerala for honeymoons
The route barely changes; the choices inside it do. Ask for a plantation-facing room in Munnar rather than a town-centre hotel — the difference between waking up to tea rows and waking up to a taxi stand is the whole point. Take the houseboat on a weekday if your dates allow; the channels are quieter and the rate is lower. Skip the group boat ride at Periyar and take a guided nature walk instead. And keep day 7 empty. Every honeymoon itinerary we have ever tightened up got worse.
Kerala with family and parents
Cut the Munnar sightseeing loop from a full day to a half day; it is mostly viewpoints and children lose interest. Add the Kathakali and Kalaripayattu evening show in Fort Kochi — the one-hour version with the make-up demonstration works far better than the longer performance. For parents with knee trouble, tell your operator in advance: Eravikulam involves a shuttle bus plus a walk, and several Munnar viewpoints have steps with no railing.
Food worth planning around
Karimeen pollichathu — pearl spot fish grilled in a banana leaf — is the dish to have on the houseboat, and it is worth asking the cook the night before. In Fort Kochi, buy fish at the nets and pay a stall to cook it; agree the price per kilo first. Thalassery biryani is a different animal from the Hyderabadi version — short-grain kaima rice, less oil. Puttu with kadala curry for breakfast, appam with stew if you want something gentler. And the toddy shops on the Alleppey backroads serve some of the best food in the state, though they are rough-and-ready, not romantic.
Common mistakes on a Kerala trip
- Trying to add Wayanad to a 6-day trip. It is on the other side of the state. It turns your holiday into a driving tour.
- Booking the houseboat for two nights. By hour 20 most people are ready to be on land. One night is the right dose.
- Assuming the houseboat cruises all night. Boats moor by around 5.30 pm under backwater rules; they do not sail after dark.
- Landing at Kochi at 9 pm and expecting to reach Munnar. Do not attempt the ghat road at night.
- Booking Munnar in February without checking Eravikulam. The park closes for calving season across roughly February–March.
- Under-dressing for Munnar. People pack for "South India" and then shiver at 1,600 m in January.

Can we do Kerala with elderly parents?
Yes, and it is one of the better Indian destinations for it, because most sightseeing is drive-up and the walking is optional. The Munnar–Thekkady drive is the one stretch worth breaking up.
Is alcohol easily available in Kerala?
Kerala licenses alcohol more tightly than Goa. Sales run through a limited number of government and licensed outlets, and many hotels below a certain star category do not serve.
