Why Goa still works, and who it suits
Goa is the only destination we sell where the flight is short, the transfers are short, and there is no packing-and-moving rhythm to manage. You land, you reach your hotel inside an hour or two, and you stay put. After Kerala's four hotel changes or Sikkim's mountain roads, that simplicity is the product. It is also the cheapest flight-based beach holiday from Delhi, usually by a clear margin over Andaman.
It suits friends groups first — Goa remains the default group trip from Delhi NCR and nothing else on this site replaces it for that. It suits couples who want a low-effort break rather than a "trip". It suits families with young children better than most people expect, provided you pick the right beach belt. It suits anyone with only four days of leave, which almost nothing else in this cluster does honestly.
It suits honeymooners only conditionally. If your picture of a honeymoon is a quiet resort and long dinners, South Goa delivers. If you want mountains, exclusivity and cool air, look at Andaman or Kerala instead — Goa in peak season is a crowd.
North Goa vs South Goa — the decision that shapes the whole trip
Most Goa disappointment traces back to booking the wrong half. The honest version:
North Goa — Baga, Calangute, Candolim, Anjuna, Vagator, Morjim — is the Goa of the movies: shacks, clubs, flea markets, water sports, nightlife that runs late, and the densest concentration of budget hotels and cheap food. It is also crowded, noisy, and in Baga–Calangute frankly commercial. Beaches here are busier and less clean than the South's.
South Goa — Colva, Benaulim, Cavelossim, Betalbatim, Palolem, Agonda — is quieter, greener and noticeably cleaner, with calmer, more gently shelving water at Benaulim and Cavelossim that suits small children. The resort standard is higher and so are the rates. Nightlife is dinner, not clubbing. Palolem, at the far south, is its own small world — a crescent bay with beach huts — and it is a 1.5–2 hour drive from the Colva belt, so treat it as a separate base, not a day trip.
Our routing advice by traveller type:
- Friends group: North, full stop. Candolim if you want to sleep at night, Baga–Anjuna if you do not.
- Couple / honeymoon: South — Cavelossim or Betalbatim for resorts, Palolem or Agonda for the barefoot version.
- Family with children: South — Benaulim or Cavelossim for the safe water; Candolim in the North as the compromise if you also want markets and activity nearby.
- First-timer who wants both: split it — two nights North, two nights South. The drive between the belts is 1.5–2 hours, so do it once, mid-trip, not daily.
The two-airport trap
Goa now has two airports and booking the wrong one costs you a two-hour transfer each way.
- Mopa (GOX), in the far north, is the newer airport with most of the new Delhi capacity — IndiGo, Akasa and Air India Express operate here. It is close to the North Goa belts but roughly 100 km — about two hours — from Colva and the South.
- Dabolim (GOI), mid-state near Vasco, is the older airport, shared with the Navy. It is the better arrival for South Goa (Colva belt is 30–45 minutes) and workable for the North (about 1–1.5 hours to Candolim).
Rule of thumb: North stay → fly Mopa. South stay → fly Dabolim. If the fare difference is under about ₹1,500 per person, pay it — the transfer you avoid is worth more. When we quote a Goa package we match the airport to your hotel automatically; a surprising number of self-booked trips do not.

Two honest notes. First, the 24 December – 1 January window is a different product: room rates triple, taxis surge, and every venue charges entry. If you want New Year in Goa, enquire by September. Second, monsoon Goa (June–September) is genuinely beautiful and genuinely cheap, but the sea is for looking at, not swimming in — water sports and most shacks are shut. We sell it only to travellers who understand that trade.
How many days do you need from Delhi?
The flight is about 2 hours 40 minutes nonstop, so Goa is the rare destination where day 1 is a real day if you take a morning departure.
- 3 nights: workable for a pure beach flop or a long weekend, one base only. Tight.
- 4 nights / 5 days: the standard, and enough — one half of Goa properly, or a 2+2 North–South split.
- 5 nights / 6 days: the comfortable version; adds a Old Goa–Panjim–Fontainhas day or a Dudhsagar trip without squeezing beach time.
- 7 nights: only for slow travellers, workationers, or a monsoon stay. Goa's sights run out before a week does; its ease does not.
Three sample Goa itineraries
Itinerary A — 4 nights / 5 days: North Goa classic (friends and first-timers)
Day 1 — Delhi to Mopa, transfer to Candolim/Baga (45–60 min). Evening on Baga or Candolim beach; dinner at a shack. Day 2 — North beach day. Morning water sports at Baga or Calangute — parasailing, jet ski, banana boat, all pay-per-ride. Sunset at Vagator's cliff, or Anjuna for the Wednesday flea market if the day aligns. Day 3 — Old Goa and Panjim (full day). Basilica of Bom Jesus and Sé Cathedral in Old Goa, then Panjim's Fontainhas Latin Quarter on foot, evening river cruise on the Mandovi or a casino visit for those inclined. Day 4 — Free beach day. No plan. Scooter to Morjim or Ashwem if restless; Chapora fort at sunset. Day 5 — Fly Delhi from Mopa. Afternoon flight lets you keep the morning on the beach.
Itinerary B — 4 nights / 5 days: South Goa couple/honeymoon pace
Day 1 — Delhi to Dabolim, transfer to Cavelossim or Benaulim (40–60 min). Beach walk, resort evening. Day 2 — Nothing scheduled. Beach, pool, couples' spa hour. This is the day the trip is for. Day 3 — South circuit. Cabo de Rama fort in the morning, Palolem for a long beach lunch, Agonda on the way back — the prettiest driving day in Goa. Day 4 — Old Goa and Panjim half-day, back by 4 pm; sunset dinner cruise or a quiet shack dinner at Betalbatim. Day 5 — Fly Delhi from Dabolim.
Itinerary C — 5 nights / 6 days: the 2+3 split for first-timers who want everything
Days 1–2 North base (Candolim): beaches, water sports, one nightlife evening. Day 3 check out, cover Old Goa and Panjim on the drive south, check in at Benaulim/Cavelossim. Days 4–5 South: one lazy resort day, one Palolem–Agonda day. Day 6 fly out of Dabolim. One hotel change, both Goas, no daily driving.

What moves the price
- Flights, violently. Delhi–Goa is one of India's most seasonal fares. The same return that costs ₹7,000–₹9,000 on a September midweek can cross ₹25,000 around Christmas–New Year. Nothing else on the quote swings this much.
- Beach belt and hotel tier. A Calangute 3-star and a Cavelossim beach resort are different products at a ₹5,000–₹12,000 per-night gap. Beach-facing rooms carry their own premium.
- Dates. 24 Dec – 1 Jan is its own price universe. Long weekends spike too — Goa is North India's default long-weekend trip.
- Package versus self-book. Goa is the one destination where a confident traveller can self-assemble cheaply. Getting to Goa from Delhi NCR
By air — the default. Nonstop Delhi to Goa runs about 2 hours 35–45 minutes to either airport, with multiple daily departures. Fly into the airport nearest your hotel (see the two-airport section above).
By train — only for the journey itself. The regular Delhi–Goa services take roughly a day and a half each way — the Goa Express and Mangla Lakshadweep Express are in the 36–39 hour band. The Konkan Railway stretch south of Ratnagiri is one of India's most scenic lines, and if you have the days, doing the last leg by day is genuinely worthwhile. But as transport, it costs you three holiday days round trip.
By road: roughly 1,900 km. No.
Goa for honeymoons
South Goa, beach-facing room, and at least one dinner booked somewhere that is not your hotel — the Betalbatim–Majorda stretch has quiet standalone restaurants that outclass most resort dining. Skip the New Year window entirely: it is the worst value and the least romantic week of the year. October–November and late January–February give you the same beaches with rooms ₹4,000–₹8,000 a night cheaper than late December. If both of you have seen Goa before, price a 3N Goa + 2N somewhere-else combination against Andaman before deciding.
Goa with family and parents
Base at Benaulim, Cavelossim or Candolim. The water at the southern family belts shelves gently, but obey lifeguard flags everywhere — Goa's undertow is real and drownings happen every season on unguarded stretches. Children rate the Splashdown water park at Anjuna and the dolphin-sighting boats; parents rate Old Goa's churches and the Mandovi evening cruise. Book hotels with pools — the sea is often unswimmable for children by late morning heat, and the pool saves the afternoon.
Food worth planning around
Eat fish curry rice at a lunch-home, not a beach shack — it is the state's daily meal and the everyday places do it best. Order pork vindaloo or sorpotel at a Goan-run restaurant to learn what the dish actually is before the British pub version reaches you. Cafreal chicken, chorizo pao, and prawn rava fry are the repeat orders. Bebinca for dessert. Feni is the local spirit — try it as urrak (the first distillate) in season, cut with Limca, rather than neat. Shack pricing is honest at most places, but confirm fish prices per portion or per kilo before it goes on the grill.
Common mistakes on a Goa trip
- Flying into the wrong airport. Mopa for a Colva hotel is a two-hour transfer you did not need.
- Booking Baga–Calangute for a quiet couple's trip. That belt is the busiest square kilometre in Goa.
- Treating Palolem as a day trip from the North. It is 2.5+ hours each way. Stay there or skip it.
- Underestimating New Year pricing. Everything from rooms to taxis to club entry multiplies in the last week of December.
- Swimming against red flags. The monsoon and post-monsoon sea is dangerous. Lifeguard flags are not decorative.
- Renting scooters without helmets or papers. Checkpoints fine tourists routinely; carry your licence and wear the helmet.

What does the New Year week in Goa really cost?
The 24 December – 1 January window prices like a different destination: flights from Delhi commonly cross ₹20,000–₹25,000 return, hotel rates run two to three times November levels, and clubs charge entry that can run into thousands per head on the 31st. If New Year in Goa is the plan, enquire by September; if the date is flexible, the same trip in mid-January costs a fraction.
Can we do Goa by train from Delhi?
You can, but it takes roughly a day and a half each way, so it only makes sense with ten or more days or a genuine wish for the journey — the Konkan Railway section into Goa is spectacular. For a standard 4–5 night holiday, the three days the train consumes cost more than the flight saves.
Is Goa worth visiting in the monsoon?
Only if you want green landscapes, waterfalls at full flow, empty roads and hotel rates at their yearly floor — and you accept that the sea is unswimmable, water sports are suspended, and many shacks are closed from June to September. It is a reading-and-rain holiday, not a beach holiday. Dudhsagar is at its most dramatic in this window, though access can close in heavy spells.
Do we need any permits for Goa?
