Why the East Coast is the first America — and who it does not suit
When an Indian family says "America", the pictures in their head are East Coast pictures: the Statue of Liberty, Times Square at night, the White House, Niagara. The East Coast is where those pictures live within a compact triangle — New York to Washington is 4 hours, New York to Niagara a short flight — which is why it fits into 7–8 nights in a way the West never can. It is also the easiest landing into America for first-timers: walkable cities, real public transport (a rarity in the USA), and the densest Indian-diaspora infrastructure on earth an hour from Manhattan.
Who it suits: first US trips, especially with parents — icons plus low physical demand; families combining touring with relatives in New Jersey/New York/Boston; history-minded travellers (DC's free museums are world-class); December dreamers.

The genuinely useful recommendation: September–October. Summer warmth without summer queues, and if you time mid-October you drive to Niagara through hillsides on fire with colour. May is the runner-up. For December-in-New-York, budget properly (₹40,000–₹60,000/person over September) and pack real winter gear — Delhi shawls do not survive a Manhattan wind in December.
How many days do you actually need?
Seven nights covers the classic triangle honestly: 3 New York + 2 Washington + 2 Niagara. Nine-to-ten nights adds Boston or Philadelphia and slows New York to a livable pace. Five nights = New York plus ONE of DC or Niagara — acceptable, tight. New York alone deserves three full days minimum; every itinerary that gives it two produces the same complaint afterwards.
Three East Coast itineraries that actually run
Itinerary A — 7 Nights / 8 Days: the classic triangle
Days 1–3 — New York. Day 1: land (morning arrival on the nonstop), walk — Times Square at dusk hits harder after a 15-hour flight than any planned event. Day 2: Statue of Liberty + Ellis Island ferry in the morning (book the first sailing; the 9 am boat has no queue and the 11 am has an hour's), One World Observatory or Empire State, evening on the High Line. Day 3: Central Park morning, one museum by temperament (Met for parents, Natural History for children), 5th Avenue or the Brooklyn Bridge walk at golden hour. Overnights Manhattan or Jersey City (see cost section). Day 4 — Train to Washington DC. Amtrak from Penn/Moynihan, ~3.5 hours — take the train, not the bus; it is the only genuinely great intercity rail in America. Afternoon: White House exterior, Washington Monument, WWII memorial walk. Overnight DC. Day 5 — DC museums. The Smithsonians are free: Air & Space, American History, Natural History — pick two, not four. Lincoln Memorial at sunset, when the crowds thin and the marble goes gold. Overnight DC. Day 6 — Fly DC/NY to Buffalo, transfer Niagara. Evening falls illumination — the lights and (seasonal) fireworks are best from the parkland promenade. Overnight Niagara (US side). Day 7 — Niagara full day. Maid of the Mist (US side) sails right into the horseshoe spray; Cave of the Winds puts you under it. Itinerary B — 9 Nights / 10 Days: add Boston and Philadelphia
Insert Philadelphia (half-day: Liberty Bell, Independence Hall — en route NY→DC by road) and finish with 2 nights Boston (Freedom Trail, Harvard/MIT — every Indian family with a college-bound teenager finds this stop suspiciously motivating). The five-city string still moves in one direction — no backtracking.

1. The Manhattan question — the biggest hotel lever on any page of this cluster. A midtown Manhattan 3-star runs USD 250–400+/night; an equivalent Jersey City/Secaucus hotel runs USD 120–180 with a 25-minute PATH ride. Our default: Jersey City for families (bigger rooms, parking, Indian food downstairs in India Square), Manhattan for honeymooners (the city at night IS the honeymoon). 2. Escorted Indian-meals coach vs independent. Air India nonstop Delhi–JFK and Delhi–Newark, United Delhi–Newark — ~14–15 hours outbound; one-stop Gulf/European routings save money and add 4–8 hours. Newark is closer to New Jersey bases; JFK to midtown fights more traffic. Currency and daily spend
USD, and New York is its most expensive habitat. Lean: cart food (the dosa cart at Washington Square is a genre), pizza slices, subway unlimited pass, free Staten Island ferry past the Statue, free Smithsonians in DC: modest by US standards. Comfortable: one paid attraction daily, sit-down dinners with tip maths: significant. Generous: Broadway orchestra seats, rooftop bars, Woodbury Common outlet hauls: cap it yourself. Card everywhere; alert your bank before flying.
Honeymoon, family and senior variants
Honeymoon. Manhattan base 4 nights (one splurge night with a skyline view), Broadway show, Brooklyn Bridge at dawn, Top of the Rock at sunset, then 2 nights Niagara with a falls-view room — the view rooms are on the Canadian side, so with only a US visa spend the saved money on the Cave of the Winds and a helicopter instead. December honeymoons here are cold and perfect. Family with children. Natural History Museum, Central Park boats, Liberty ferry, Niagara boats — the East Coast's child hits are all outdoors-and-water; July works despite crowds. Jersey City base, always. Senior parents. The East Coast is America's most senior-friendly circuit: trains not road-trips, benches and museums, low walking distances by taxi. Vegetarian food reality
The easiest vegetarian destination in America. New Jersey's India Square and Edison's Oak Tree Road are the largest Indian food concentrations outside India — Gujarati thalis, Udupi, chaat, Jain-marked menus included. Manhattan has Saravana Bhavan and a hundred vegetarian-capable menus per neighbourhood; DC and Niagara both keep Indian restaurants within tourist reach. What NOT to do on the East Coast
- Do not assume the Canadian side of Niagara is included. Separate country, separate visa. Check before you promise the family the postcard view.
- Do not buy attraction tickets at street kiosks or from Times Square costume characters. Official sites or a city pass (only if you will genuinely use 4+ attractions).
- Do not drive in Manhattan. Park the idea with the car in New Jersey; the subway outruns everything.
- Do not schedule two observatories. One skyline-from-above is a memory; two is a receipt.
- Do not leave DC museums unbooked in blossom season — free still requires timed passes for some (Air & Space).
Mistakes Delhi travellers make on the East Coast
- Two days for New York. Three minimum; the city punishes haste with regret.
- Booking a falls-view room "on the US side". The full frontal view rooms are Canadian; US-side rooms see the river. Know what you are paying for.
- Taking the bus NY→DC to save USD 30 over Amtrak. I-95 traffic makes the saving cost two hours.
- December with Delhi winterwear. Buy or borrow a real down jacket; the wind chill off the Hudson is a different physics.
