Why go, and who this is really for

Saudi Arabia is the most interesting new destination in this entire cluster, and almost nobody in the Indian market is selling it well. The reason to go is AlUla — a valley of sandstone outcrops in the northwest where the Nabataeans, the same civilisation that built Petra, carved tombs into rock faces at a site called Hegra. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is spectacular, and it currently receives a fraction of Petra's visitors.

Add Jeddah's old town, Al Balad, with its coral-stone merchant houses and carved wooden balconies. Add Riyadh, which is a modern Gulf capital with a genuinely good national museum and the Diriyah heritage site on its edge. That is a real six-night trip with a shape to it.

Who it suits: curious travellers, people who have already done Dubai twice, photographers, history-minded families with teenagers, and Indian Muslim travellers combining leisure travel with Umrah. It suits anyone who wants to see somewhere before it becomes crowded.

Who it does not suit: first-time international travellers, anyone whose holiday requires alcohol or nightlife (there is none — alcohol is prohibited entirely), travellers who want beaches and resorts, and anyone unwilling to observe a conservative dress code.

The important clarification most pages get wrong: the tourist visa permits travel to the country generally, but Makkah and Madinah have their own access rules for non-Muslims, and entry to Makkah is restricted to Muslims. This must be stated accurately on the page rather than glossed over. See the visa section.

Best time to visit

Saudi Arabia is large and the climate varies, but for a tourist itinerary the answer is simple: November to March, and effectively nothing else.

Ramadan shifts the entire rhythm of the country — daytime eating and drinking in public is not permitted, hours change, and many sites operate differently. It is a fascinating time to visit and a difficult time for a first visit. Check your dates.

Three itineraries

Itinerary A — 4 Nights / 5 Days: AlUla focused

Day 1 — Fly Delhi to Riyadh or Jeddah, connect to AlUla. Arrive, transfer to the hotel, evening free. AlUla's night sky is one of its genuine attractions. Overnight AlUla. Day 5 — Jeddah Corniche in the morning, depart.

Itinerary B — 6 Nights / 7 Days: Riyadh + AlUla + Jeddah

Day 1 — Arrive Riyadh (nonstop from Delhi, about 4h35m). Transfer, rest. Overnight Riyadh. Day 2 — Diriyah — the mud-brick original seat of the Saudi state, restored and genuinely impressive. National Museum in the afternoon. Kingdom Centre sky bridge at sunset. Overnight Riyadh. Day 3 — Edge of the World escarpment day trip — a dramatic cliff formation about two hours from Riyadh on rough track, so a 4x4 and a guide are not optional. Evening flight to AlUla. Overnight AlUla. Day 4 — Hegra and Elephant Rock. Overnight AlUla. Day 5 — AlUla Old Town, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah, Maraya. Evening flight or drive to Jeddah. Overnight Jeddah. For Muslim travellers, the natural extension is Makkah and Madinah, which pairs with Jeddah geographically — Jeddah is the standard arrival point for Umrah. This is a different kind of trip with its own permissions, transport and accommodation logic, and it should be planned as such rather than bolted on.

For non-Muslim travellers wanting two more nights, Taif in the mountains above Makkah province (rose farms, cooler air) and the Farasan Islands in the Red Sea are the two additions worth considering.

Saudi Arabia is not a budget destination and travellers should know that upfront. The costs that push it above a comparable UAE trip:

Internal flights. Riyadh–AlUla–Jeddah involves two domestic sectors. Driving between them is not realistic on a one-week trip; Riyadh to AlUla is well over a thousand kilometres.
AlUla hotel rates. AlUla has limited inventory and strong international demand. It is the single most expensive night of the trip.
Guided access at heritage sites. Hegra requires an official guided tour rather than independent wandering.
4x4 and guide for Edge of the World. Not a place to attempt in a saloon car.

Saudi visa for Indian passport holders

What appears to be broadly true from secondary sources, all of which needs confirmation:

Saudi Arabia issues tourist visas to Indian passport holders, and has done since opening to leisure tourism in 2019.
There is an eVisa route and a visa on arrival route for holders of valid US, UK or Schengen visas — the latter reportedly processed very quickly through a platform launched in late 2025.
A tourist visa is commonly described as multiple-entry, valid one year, with a maximum stay per visit.
The Nusuk app has expanded from Umrah into general tourism, and reportedly now handles advance booking for some sites. Travellers should download it before arrival.

Two things we can say with confidence and should say prominently:

Non-Muslims can visit Saudi Arabia as tourists. This is the question we are asked most and the answer is yes — the country opened to leisure tourism in 2019.
Makkah is restricted to Muslims. A tourist visa does not grant access. Any page that implies otherwise is actively misleading and could cause a traveller a serious problem at a checkpoint.

Flights from Delhi

Nonstop service from Delhi to Saudi Arabia is good, because of the long-standing labour and pilgrimage traffic.

Delhi → Riyadh (DEL–RUH): nonstop, about 4 hours 35 minutes. Operated nonstop by Air India, Saudia, flynas and IndiGo — four carriers, which is unusually healthy competition.
Delhi → Jeddah (DEL–JED): nonstop, fastest around 5 hours 55 minutes, with typical schedules closer to 6 hours 40 minutes. Three carriers operate the route.
AlUla is reached by domestic flight from Riyadh or Jeddah. There is no service from India.

The routing that makes the trip work: fly into Riyadh and out of Jeddah. The itinerary runs naturally west, and an open-jaw ticket removes an entirely wasted internal sector at the end. Almost nobody asks for this and it is one of the easiest savings on the whole trip.

Currency and daily spend

The Saudi riyal (SAR) is pegged to the US dollar, so it is stable to budget against.

Saudi Arabia runs more expensive day-to-day than the UAE outside the very top end, mainly because tourist infrastructure is newer and thinner. Cards are widely accepted in cities; carry cash for AlUla and smaller towns. There is no tipping culture as strong as in the UAE, but it is appreciated.

Honeymoon, family and friends

Honeymoon. AlUla is a genuinely romantic destination — desert lodges, stargazing, a valley almost to yourselves at the right hour. The absence of alcohol and nightlife is either irrelevant to you or a dealbreaker; be honest with yourselves about which.

Family with teenagers. Strong. Hegra, Diriyah, Edge of the World and Al Balad are all substantial, and teenagers who have been dragged around too many malls respond well to it. Younger children will find the driving distances hard.

Friends group. Works if the group is aligned on what the trip is. A group expecting a Gulf party holiday will have a bad time. A group of photographers or history-minded travellers will have an outstanding one.

Multi-generational and Muslim family travel. The Jeddah + Umrah combination is the highest-volume real use case from India, and it deserves its own dedicated page rather than a paragraph here.

Food, and the vegetarian question

Be realistic: Saudi Arabia is harder than the UAE for vegetarians, and considerably harder outside Riyadh and Jeddah.

In Riyadh and Jeddah, Indian restaurants exist in reasonable numbers, reflecting a large Indian expatriate population — vegetarian food is findable. In AlUla, which is where you will spend the most nights on a good itinerary, options are limited and hotel-dependent. Notify the operator of vegetarian and Jain requirements at the time of booking, not on arrival.

All food is halal by default. Alcohol is prohibited nationwide, without exception, including in hotels — this is not the UAE and there are no licensed venues.

What NOT to do — this section matters here more than anywhere

Do not attempt to enter Makkah on a tourist visa as a non-Muslim. There are checkpoints, and this is treated seriously.
Dress conservatively. Men: long trousers, covered shoulders. Women: loose clothing covering shoulders and knees at minimum.
Alcohol and drugs. Alcohol is illegal to bring in, buy or consume. Do not attempt it. Drug penalties are severe.
Photography. Do not photograph people without permission, especially women. Do not photograph government, military or security installations.
Public behaviour. Public displays of affection are not acceptable. Public decency regulations are enforced.
Prayer times. Many shops and some restaurants close briefly at each of the five daily prayer times. This is not a problem, but it will disrupt a tightly-scheduled day if you have not planned for it.
Do not underestimate distances. Saudi Arabia is vast. Two cities that look close on a map may be a full day apart.

Common mistakes

Trying to do it as a road trip. The distances defeat a one-week itinerary. Use the domestic flights.
Booking AlUla late. Limited inventory, strong demand, and the peak season is narrow. This is the booking that must go in first.
Going in summer. AlUla is an outdoor destination. June to September is not a leisure season.
Assuming the UAE rulebook applies. It does not. Saudi Arabia is meaningfully more conservative and there is no alcohol at all.
Not clarifying the Makkah question before booking. Get this right at the enquiry stage.
