It suits families with children better than almost any other South Indian hill station, because the attractions are structured — a lake with boats, a garden, a train, a chocolate factory, a viewpoint with a telescope. It suits older travellers, because nearly everything is drive-up. It suits summer travellers from the plains, because May in Ooty is pleasant when Delhi is at 44°C.
It suits people looking for solitude poorly. Ooty in April–June and during Diwali is genuinely crowded, with traffic jams on the approach road and queues at every attraction. If you want quiet Nilgiris, base yourself in Coonoor instead and day-trip to Ooty.

The honest read for a Delhi traveller: Ooty alone does not justify the flight. Pair it with Coonoor and either Mysuru or Coorg, or fold it into a longer South India trip. Flying down for two nights in Ooty and flying back is a lot of airport for a lake and a garden.
The hairpin section from Mettupalayam is where motion sickness happens. If anyone in the car is prone to it, take medication before Mettupalayam, not after the third bend.

Two monsoons touch the Nilgiris — the southwest from around June and the northeast from around October. Neither is a washout in the way Kerala's is, but October rain is heavier in the evenings.
The value window is September to November. The best conditions are December to February. The worst value is April–May, when you pay peak rates to sit in traffic.
How many days do you need?
- 2 nights: enough to see central Ooty and the lake, not enough for Coonoor.
- 3 nights: the right number. Two in Ooty, one in Coonoor, or all three in Coonoor with day trips.
- 4–5 nights: worth it only if you are adding Mudumalai or Bandipur, or continuing to Coorg or Mysuru.
Coming from Delhi, add a day for the Coimbatore road transfer at each end. A 4N/5D total is the realistic minimum shape.

Itinerary A — 3 nights: Ooty and Coonoor
Day 1 — Coimbatore to Ooty (86 km, 3–3.5 hrs). Land at CJB in the morning. Drive via Mettupalayam and the hairpins. Reach Ooty by afternoon. Evening at the Government Botanical Garden and a walk on Charing Cross. Overnight Ooty.
Day 2 — Ooty full day. Doddabetta Peak, the highest point in the Nilgiris at about 2,637 m, early before the cloud comes in. Then Ooty Lake for boating, the Rose Garden, and Pykara — the falls and the lake with its boathouse. Overnight Ooty.
Day 3 — Coonoor. Drive down to Coonoor (about 19 km, 45 min). Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose viewpoint, Lamb's Rock, and a working tea factory. Coonoor is greener and considerably calmer than Ooty. Overnight Coonoor.
Day 4 — Coonoor to Coimbatore and fly out. About 70 km, 2.5 hrs down the ghat. Morning departure recommended.
Itinerary B — 4 nights with the toy train and Mudumalai
Day 1 Coimbatore to Ooty. Day 2 Ooty sightseeing as above. Day 3 Nilgiri Mountain Railway — the Ooty to Coonoor section is the practical joyride for most travellers; the full Mettupalayam climb is the classic but takes most of a day and books out far ahead. Afternoon in Coonoor. Day 4 Mudumalai Tiger Reserve — a morning safari, about 65 km from Ooty through the Gudalur road. Overnight Masinagudi or back in Ooty. Day 5 drive to Coimbatore, fly out.
Itinerary C — 3 nights based entirely in Coonoor
For couples and anyone who dislikes crowds. Stay in a colonial-era bungalow or estate homestay in Coonoor for all three nights. Day 1 arrive, evening at Sim's Park. Day 2 day trip to Ooty covering Doddabetta, the Botanical Garden and the lake, returning to Coonoor by evening. Day 3 Dolphin's Nose, Lamb's Rock, a tea estate walk, and a tea-tasting session. Day 4 down to Coimbatore. This is the version we recommend to honeymoon couples.

Ooty for honeymoons
Base in Coonoor. This is the single highest-value piece of advice on this page. Coonoor has the better stays, the quieter roads and the same views, and Ooty is 45 minutes away when you want it. Book a heritage bungalow or a tea-estate homestay with a fireplace — Nilgiri nights are cold enough from November to February to make that worth something. Take the Ooty–Coonoor train section together rather than driving it. And skip the Flower Show weekend in May unless you specifically want crowds.
Ooty with family
This is where Ooty earns its reputation. The Botanical Garden is genuinely good for children, the lake has pedal boats, Doddabetta has a telescope house, and the chocolate and tea factory visits work well for ages six and up. Thread Garden and the toy train complete the set. For grandparents, note that Doddabetta involves a short but steep walk from the parking area, and Dolphin's Nose in Coonoor has uneven steps.
Food and experiences worth naming
Nilgiri tea, obviously — but buy it at a factory in Coonoor, not from a shop on Charing Cross. Ooty's varkey and homemade chocolate are the standard souvenirs and are better than they sound. Look for Badaga and local Tamil food rather than the north-Indian menus that dominate the tourist strip. In Coonoor, a proper English-style breakfast at a colonial bungalow is a genuine experience rather than a gimmick.
Experiences: the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a tea factory tour where you see withering troughs and rollers actually running, an early morning at Doddabetta before the cloud rolls in, and the drive through the Pykara shola forest.
Common mistakes
- Going in May because it is hot in Delhi. So does everyone else. Expect traffic on the ghat and queues at every gate.
- Staying in Ooty town centre. It is congested. Stay slightly out, or in Coonoor.
- Booking Doddabetta for the afternoon. Cloud typically closes the view. Go early.
- Assuming toy train tickets are easy. They are limited and book out in season.
- Underestimating the cold. At 2,240 m in December, evenings are genuinely cold.
- Not taking motion sickness seriously. 36 hairpin bends is not an exaggeration; it is a count.
- Trying to add Kodaikanal in the same three days. They are roughly 250 km apart on mountain roads. It is a full travel day.
