What the Chardham Yatra actually is, and who it suits
The Char Dham of Uttarakhand — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — are visited west to east in that traditional order, a circuit of roughly 1,600 km of mountain road ex-Haridwar. Two of the four involve genuine treks: Yamunotri (about 5–6 km each way from Janki Chatti) and Kedarnath (a long, steep climb from Gaurikund —). Gangotri and Badrinath are road-head temples: the vehicle drops you a short walk away.
Who it suits: pilgrims of any age provided the plan is honest about the two treks. Ponies, palanquins (dandi/kandi) and helicopter shuttles exist precisely so that a 70-year-old can complete the yatra — but they must be budgeted, not discovered on the mountain. Who should think twice: anyone with an unmanaged cardiac condition (Kedarnath temple sits at roughly 3,580 m), and travellers who imagine this as sightseeing. Roads are long, hotels at the dhams are basic, and days start at 5 am. Done with the right expectations, it is the most rewarding journey on this site.

Registration: mandatory, free, and it changes every year
For 2026, verified against current reporting in research on 27 Aug 2026:
- Registration is mandatory for every yatri and is done on the Uttarakhand Tourist Care portal, registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, using Aadhaar. Registration itself is free (thomascook.in guide, shikhar.com).
- For 2026 the state split slots 60% online / 40% offline, with offline counters at Haridwar, Rishikesh and points along the routes, open round-the-clock in the opening fortnight (himalayandreamtreks.in).
- Each dham date you select is tied to your registration; carry the registration printout/QR plus Aadhaar. Checkpoints do turn back unregistered vehicles in peak weeks.
- This system is revised every season. Before travelling in any year after 2026, re-check the portal — quota splits, health-certificate rules for seniors, and vehicle trip-card rules have all changed year to year.

2026 opening dates, and when to go
The shrines opened for 2026 as follows: Yamunotri and Gangotri on 19 April (Akshaya Tritiya), Kedarnath on 22 April, Badrinath on 23 April — the Kedarnath date was announced on Maha Shivaratri, per the government's own newsonair reporting (newsonair.gov.in). Closing follows the winter ritual calendar around Diwali–Bhai Dooj.

How many days you need
- 9N/10D ex-Haridwar — the standard full circuit, and the honest minimum. Anything shorter compresses the Kedarnath day dangerously.
- 11N/12D — adds rest days and buffer for road blocks; the right format for seniors.
- 5N/6D Do Dham (Kedarnath + Badrinath) — the most popular short form.
- 1–2 days by helicopter — full Chardham same-week charters exist ex-Dehradun; a different product at a different price altitude.
Three sample itineraries
A. Full Chardham by road — 9N/10D ex-Haridwar
Day 1 — Haridwar → Barkot via Dehradun and Mussoorie's Kempty side (~180 km, 7 hrs). Overnight Barkot. Day 2 — Barkot → Janki Chatti (~45 km), trek/pony to Yamunotri (5–6 km), darshan, return. Overnight Barkot. Day 3 — Barkot → Uttarkashi (~80 km) via Radi Top. Vishwanath temple in the evening. Overnight Uttarkashi. Day 4 — Uttarkashi → Gangotri (~100 km) along the Bhagirathi, darshan, return to Uttarkashi. Overnight Uttarkashi. Day 5 — Uttarkashi → Guptkashi/Sitapur (~190 km, a long 8–9 hr day via Tilwara). B. Do Dham (Kedarnath + Badrinath) — 5N/6D ex-Haridwar
Day 1 Haridwar → Guptkashi. Day 2 Kedarnath darshan (trek/pony/heli), night up or descend. Day 3 descend, rest Guptkashi. Day 4 Guptkashi → Badrinath, evening darshan. Day 5 Mana village, descend to Rudraprayag. Day 6 Haridwar. This is the format we recommend for first-timers testing their fitness before committing to all four dhams.
C. Senior-friendly Chardham — 11N/12D with helicopter assist
The road circuit as in A, but: an extra night at Uttarkashi and Guptkashi each, ponies pre-booked for Yamunotri, and the Kedarnath leg by helicopter shuttle from the Guptkashi–Phata–Sirsi belt. Kedarnath helicopter seats are sold only through IRCTC's official HeliYatra portal, heliyatra.irctc.co.in — anyone selling "confirmed heli tickets" outside that portal is reselling or worse. Slots open in advance windows and finish in minutes; we align hotel dates to the heli slot, not the other way around.

Where those numbers come from: live listings on 27 Aug 2026 showed group departures from ₹14,500–₹15,500 (yatrio.in), standard private packages at ₹19,500–₹25,500 (shrineyatra.com, travelshrine.com), and deluxe/luxury tiers at ₹32,000–₹48,000 (chardhamtour.in).
What moves the price: vehicle (shared tempo traveller vs dedicated Innova — the single biggest factor), hotel tier at Uttarkashi/Guptkashi/Badrinath (options are genuinely limited; "deluxe" at the dhams means clean and warm, not plush), season, and group size. Usually included: accommodation, breakfast + dinner, vehicle throughout, driver costs, tolls. Always excluded and significant: ponies/palanquins (Yamunotri and Kedarnath together can add several thousand rupees per person — agree rates at the government-fixed counters), helicopter tickets, VIP/special darshan where offered, and personal puja costs. Ask any operator to put pony and heli assumptions in writing — this is where budgets blow up.
Getting there from Delhi NCR
Haridwar is the classic base: ~210 km from Delhi, 4–5 hours via NH334, or by train to Haridwar Jn. Dehradun airport (DED, Jolly Grant) works for fly-in pilgrims and is the base for heli charters. Food and practical notes
The route is entirely vegetarian, and alcohol is not available or welcome on the yatra corridors. Eat light before treks; the standard failure is a heavy paratha breakfast before the Kedarnath climb. Carry: rain shell in every month (mountain weather ignores forecasts), woollens even in June for Kedarnath and Badrinath nights, a small daypack for trek days, ORS, and any daily medication in hand luggage — pharmacies at the dhams are basic. Mobile networks: Jio and BSNL cover most towns; expect dead zones between them. Badrinath's Tapt Kund hot spring bath before darshan is the tradition worth keeping.
Common mistakes
- Booking dates before checking registration slots. Hotels are refundable; a missing registration date is not negotiable at the checkpoint.
- Underestimating the Kedarnath day. It is a high-altitude climb of many hours. Train for it with stair-walking for a month, or budget the pony/heli honestly.
- Compressing to 7–8 days by road. That removes every buffer; one landslide and the whole chain of hotel nights collapses.
- Buying "confirmed helicopter tickets" from agents. Kedarnath heli seats sell only via IRCTC HeliYatra; treat any other claim as resale risk.
- Sending parents on a shared-coach package to save money. Shared departures wait for no one; seniors need a vehicle that moves at their pace.
- Ignoring the monsoon. July–August roadblocks are routine, not exceptional. If those are your only dates, add two buffer days and travel insured.

How difficult is the Kedarnath trek?

What is the correct order of the Char Dham?

How do I book the Kedarnath helicopter?
Only through IRCTC's official HeliYatra portal (heliyatra.irctc.co.in), which sells seats for the Guptkashi, Phata and Sirsi helipads in advance booking windows that sell out very fast. Fares are government-regulated and revised each season. No agent can legitimately sell you a confirmed seat outside that portal — treat such offers as resale risk.
Is Chardham Yatra safe during monsoon?

What should I pack for the yatra?
Layered warm clothing even in summer (dham nights are cold), a rain shell in every month, broken-in walking shoes, a daypack for trek days, ORS and personal medicines, torch, power bank, and photocopies of Aadhaar plus your registration QR. Keep luggage modest — hotel halls and vehicle boots at the dhams are small.
